This week’s question:
Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

I’ve never been a huge Valentine’s Day person. I guess it just never struck me as a holiday to go all out for… BUT… My daughter LOVES it. The thought of hearts and pink and flowers and more pink and a day to love and be loved and candy and frills and lace – yeah, she loves every single bit of it. So despite my reluctance to the day, I like to make it special for her. I guess that means I am learning to celebrate it.

When we believe in God we then learn to walk in faith and trust God. But first we must believe, and it’s up to us, we can either choose to believe in Him or not. But faith will mean nothing until we believe with all our heart that God is who He says He is.

  1. Valentines day is a pagan hoilday and therefore is considered idolatry. Before I came to jesus I love valentines day and sometimes Ido long for the affection that valentines day offer. People say it should be everyday but in reality its not the case for some christian women.so how can christian women celebrate love without the idolatry that valentines day have to offer?

  2. Monica,
Yes Valentine’s Day is rooted in Paganism. So are Christmas and Easter. I have struggled with the balance of all of the major holidays that have their roots in Paganism. Certain traditions within these holidays are directly linked to pagan rituals. Others have been brought about from Christianity. So where is the line? I believe this is one of the areas in our journey of Faith that is VERY personal. Each person (and family) needs to pray and seek the Lord as to how they will proceed with the Nationally recognized holidays. If you are strictly looking at the root of the holiday then I fear you are treading into a legalistic waters. If you know in your heart why YOU personally do (or don’t do) certain traditions or holidays, I think that is what matters most.

For example, if a child LOVES Valentines day, they are most likely just loving the idea of candy and flowers, pink and red hearts. Their heart is not turned towards the Saint of the day. This is a great day to talk about God’s love for us. Your traditions can be as God-Centered as you choose. It is your heart and motive while carrying out traditions that matter most to God.

One last note. This is all my personal opinion on the matter. I have prayed and feel peace about the balance of certain Holidays in my home. I respect your choice to disregard the holidays that you feel within your own walk are pagan. My goal was not to disrespect your point of view in any way. All was intended to be spoken in Love and I hope it was taken as such :)

    • Yes of course:-) that’s all I want is honesty. I respect ur honesty. Yes I will pray about some more because sometimes this walk could be a little challenging. So there are a lot of things I do battle with from my past for example the holidays. I find it hard to balance as a christian because I want to be around my family but they don’t understand why I don’t celebrate the holidays or watch certain things on tv. As far as legalism I just want to know the truth. If its pagan I can’t raise my children on a false doctrine. I was raised on the holidays but now I know the truth so I can’t tell my kids jesus was born on christmas because its not true. As far as easter I believe thethe resurrection of jesus christ. I don’t understand where eggs and bunnys can relate. But I will pray about it som
