Book Review & Giveaway: What if God is Like This? by Will Hathaway

About the Book

Look at the injustice, pain, and suffering in the world. Do you wonder how a loving God could condone or tolerate any of this? With all our travail and travesties it is troubling to reconcile a belief that God is good with so much that is bad. What If God Is Like This? candidly addresses the difficult questions.

The book provides a unique look at Christianity and God’s interaction with humanity. It challenges some of the traditional perspectives provided by religion and draws out strong evidence that God’s greatest desire for mankind is freedom, not obedience.

It examines the crucifixion of Christ from God’s perspective and shows how this event remains eternally impactful on God as a Being, pushing Him to His very limits as an omnipotent creature. Who is this Personality in the sky and why can’t the world agree about Him?

What If God Is Like This? is written for those who question and who yearn to stretch the boundaries of traditional thought, belief, and practice. This is a book about freedom: freedom to think, freedom to love, and freedom to ask the big “What If?Join the quest to meet the God you’ve never known.

My Review

When I first received this book in the mail to review, my husband hijacked the book because he was intrigued by the title of the book, and then the back cover. My husband doesn’t usually take an interest in the books I have to review, so when he asked if he could read it, of course I said yes. He was in a moment of his walk where I know he was seeking answers and after reading “What if God is Like This?” he felt he was truly meant to read this book. So my husband gives the book 5 stars…

After I got my hands on the book I saw why my husband was so happy with What if God is Like This? I love that Will Hathaway is willing to answer the tough questions. I think a lot of us like to avoid these tough questions, but that doesn’t mean that people aren’t still asking these questions in their heart and mind. While reading this book my heart was stretched, and my eyes filled with tears. I’m STILL thinking about what I read in this book, every single day. Honestly if we could just grasp the concepts within What if God is Like This? I KNOW we would be able to walk in the freedom that Christ has given us through His sacrifice on the cross. If you are wanting to dive deeper in a better understanding of God, His Son, and what it means to be a Christian then this book is definitely for you.

If you aren’t sure you know much of anything about God, or if you even believe in Him, then this is the book for you.

Below are some of my favorite quotes from the book What if God is Like This?

Freedom is about where your decisions and choices lead you and what is left over afterward.

Love is only valid where free will exists. If one can’t choose to love, one can’t love.

Sin, by its very nature, is an imperfection. So if God is perfect, then how could imperfection co-exist with perfection? They are oil and water; they can’t mix. It would be as if God were a one million gallon tank of pure water and a human was a thimble full of muddy water.

all have experienced the freedom to sin, but we have not all experienced the freedom from sin, and that is what He came to bring us.

If real love is truly unconditional, then one should be able to apply it to anybody on earth.

When we examine the Great Commission of Christ documented at the conclusion of the Book of Matthew, we see that the calling was to “…go and make disciples of all nations…” Somehow over the years Christians have reconfigured this verse into this: “Go and make ‘converts’ of all nations.”

What is God is Like This? is truly a book that will not only renew your faith but also stretch it.
