Life in this fallen world is hard. The trials are many and the suffering persistent. If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time, you know this is true. Jesus promised his followers that we would have trouble. He told us we would have to bear our own crosses and walk the narrow path that most fear to tread.
How does a Christian live this kind of life without sinking into despair?
It is the anchor for our soul. When the storms of life rage, hope stops us from sinking. Hope keeps us focused on Christ and not on the waves crashing around us.
The hope that a Christian has is different from the hope that the world speaks of. Many use the word hope in the same way they use the word “wish”. But true hope is not a wish. It is one of the triumvirate, closely linked with faith and love. Hope puts its faith in the love of God and is expectant of what He will do. Hope digs its roots deep in the soil of God’s grace and stands firm in the winds of life’s circumstances. Hope knows that the sun is always shining above every storm cloud and waits for its rays to break through the darkness.
But hope doesn’t rest in our own strength or good intentions. It is grounded and dependent on Christ. For Christ is the source and fountain of all our hope. It is only because of His victorious work on the cross for us that we have hope. His perfect life and sacrificial death won hope for us when we had none. Without Christ, we are hopeless.
Our hope is anchored in Christ. When life’s challenges, storms, and trials threaten to loosen our anchor, we have nothing to fear. Even when we lose our grip, He never loses His grip on us. The One who holds the world in His hands always keeps us in the shadow of His wings. He is our strong tower, fortress, and rock. Nothing and no one can break His hold on us.
Remember this hope when life’s circumstances begin to crash in on you. Rest in the power of what Jesus did when He sacrificed everything for you. Remind yourself of Christ’s great love for you. And rejoice that no matter how harsh the storm, the One who created the wind and waves is right there in the boat with you.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39
