Obey God, Not Sin

When we think about obedience we are always keen on remembering to OBEY GOD, LISTEN TO GOD, FOLLOW GOD. But if we look at the word obedience in a different way, we start to see how it can be used differently.

While it’s important to obey our Heavenly Father and do right by Him, we must remember to NOT obey Satan, our worldly temptations and inner sinful thoughts.

You see, obedience goes both ways.

Obey God, do not obey sin.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. (Romans 6:12 NIV)

The Bible says we have sinful thoughts:

“What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” (Mark 7:20-23 NIV)

It is only by the Grace of God that we may conceive thoughts which are pure:

“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;” (Ezekiel 36:25, 26 NIV)

We were not created to be impure:

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. (1 Thessalonians 4:7 NIV)

God says obedience defines your love for Him:

“If you love me, keep my commands…” (John 14:15 NIV)

Turn away from sinful thoughts, and acknowledge that we are all sinful creatures, and that sometimes we harbor sinful feelings and thoughts. These thoughts are impure and we should turn to Jesus and let those impurities fall away, that way He can make us anew. He wants to restore purity and goodness in our hearts, but this can’t happen if we are disobedient to Him and obedient to sin.

So to look at obedience in a different way- we can “turn off” the obedience to sin, (worldly and fleshly desires), and let God envelop our hearts with good by being obedient to Him.

Obedience Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I come to You today to ask that You wipe my heart clean and fill me with Your goodness. I know when I have sinful thoughts, or when my fleshly desires are tempting, and I want these impurities to be wiped clean. Lord, sprinkle me with clean water and restore me. I no longer want to be a slave to these thoughts or even to obey them, I want to be pure and humbled by Your presence within me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
