Homeschool Year 2009-2010

I’m am so excited about the upcoming school year. This year will be our first OFFICIAL year of homeschooling TWO kiddos. One is going to be in 5th grade, and the other in Kindergarten. My youngest will be in preschool, but we aren’t enrolling her officially this year.
I wonder why I am so excited this year? It’s a little upsetting because my little man is growing up, but he is such a thinker and his brain is running a mile a minute. I think I’m just excited to teach him stuff and watch him soak it all in like a sponge! That’s always fun and exciting to watch.
Ever since we started homeschooling my oldest a few years back the new school year has always been met with a little bit of apprehension. But not this year, and that is a welcome surprise. It’s nice to finally be settling in to the homeschooling lifestyle. I certainly appreciate the blessing that it is to be with my kids everyday and watch them grow and learn.
This year I plan to buy one of those Flip Video Cameras and record a lot more of our days together. Especially the school days. How exciting is it to be able to record my little mans very first day of REAL school? I wouldn’t be able to do that if I were putting him on a school bus this fall, and THAT certainly is a BLESSING!
One thing I have learned through this homeschooling process -is it’s just that, a process. Don’t be discouraged if it takes some time to find your homeschooling groove. It may take a few tries here and there, but it’s worth it. The best thing about homeschooling is that you can certainly fit it around your lifestyle.
I remember all to well sitting on my bed, opening the Abeka 3rd grade teachers guide to math, trying to read and UNDERSTAND what I was suppose to do to teach my child math, only to burst into to tears wondering what in the world have I done.
A couple things I have learned since that dark moment on my bed:
- Don’t look at the math curriculum first, lol!! Start with something a little more simple like language, then approach the math lesson plans.
- It takes TIME to adjust. We get so caught up in how we were schooled within a classroom we don’t realize that homeschooling isn’t suppose to be like public school. Yes we need to give our kids an awesome education, but homeschooling allows for more flexibility than traditional public schooling.
I could go on and on about how homeschooling has been a true blessing to our entire family, but I just wanted to share a few thoughts on the excitement I have towards the upcoming school year.
What are you looking forward to this upcoming year of school?

I love to hear that other moms are already excited and planning! I got all of my books in early March and have spent the last three months planning VERY slowly! I love it! I squeeze in a few minutes here and there while my girls are doing their independent work – previewing a book, scheduling math, making a list of picture books to add in.
I think the thing I’m looking forward to the most is that my toddler is turning into a preschooler, which means he’ll be more of an involvement than a distraction. I think that’s going to be such fun!
Ann, I thin that’s why I’m so excited my 5 yo is going to be home schooled this year, he will be participating and like you said not really a distraction anymore, lol.
I have never had the urge or desire to homeschool my kids but we recently joined a homeschool preschool coop through our local moms group and it has been wonderful. Will I only host and teach once a month, it has opened my eyes to the possibilities.
Courtney, that’s great you have a co-op there. Homeschooling is challenging but so rewarding.
Hmmm…..my 6yr daughter is begging me to homeschool her this coming fall. I don’t really think she understands what it involves, but still she is quite serious about it. the thought scares me to death. And I think in the back of my mind, “could I do this?”… I don’t know…..I have family that says I couldn’t make it work b/c I have a 9m old son.
Anyway. it is encouraging to hear from other Moms that are actually doing it! I need to do alot of praying about this!!

I wouldn’t stress… I have talked to ALOT of moms who homeschool who do no more then read to their child daily, inroll them in a few community classes, answer the constint questions 6yr olds ask, play PBS or other education videos for their children, and take them out on feild trips (park, museam, library, anywere even simi-education). Just through these things alone a child learns ALOT and gets way more love and attention then they ever would at public school
