Book Review: In Praise of Stay at Home Moms – By Dr. Laura Schlessinger
The beginning of “In Praise of Stay at Home Moms” feels more like an attack on the working outside the home mom more than something that will make a stay at home mom feel better about her choice to be a stay at home wife and mother. However the rest of the book really does motivate the stay at home mom.
I personally found the book encouraging me to be proud of my position as a full time wife and mother. Honestly their aren’t very many resources out there ready to provide an encouraging word to the Stay at Home Mom. It also helped me to stop focusing on the negative and stop taking the special gift of being a stay at home mom for granted.
I would have preferred to read more praise for the stay at home mom who takes their job to the next level & decides to homeschool their children. That would be a great book idea “In Praise of the Stay at Home Homeschooling Mom!”
Some of the topics discussed in “In praise of Stay at Home Moms”:
- The Stay at Home Moms Inner Struggles
- The Naysayers
- How Staying at Home Impacts the Marriage
- How Stay at Home Moms Benefit Kids
- Being a Stay at Home Mom Changes You
- The Good, The Bad, The Unforgettable
- Advice for SAHM’s
All in all I feel this is a great book for the Stay at Home Mom to find the motivation & encouragement they certainly need and deserve. This is also a great book to read if you are on the fence as to whether or not to become a stay at home wife and mom.
I give the book In praise of Stay-at-Home-Moms 2.5 out of 4 stars. It was a great read, however I wasn’t a fan of the negativity towards working outside the home from the first couple of chapters.

I praise all mothers. Why the war?… Can’t we all just get along? I’ve been on both sides of the “grass is always greener cliche.” There are pros and cons in each scenario and truth be told, why choose? It is possible to find the flexibility that enables one to achieve personal and professional aspirations. It’s a win-win I must admit!
Brandi, I agree – why the war? With the book it stated that a lot of moms now are being put down because they don’t have the career. I’m truly saddened to see that the war truly goes both ways, and that upsets me. It’s as if us moms don’t already have enough pressure.
I don’t really care for the war, and would much rather encourage moms who choose to be full time stay at home wife and mother, that’s why CSAHM.com is here. It’s a special role with lot’s of challenges and sacrifices, but full of rewards!
Thanks for sharing that great resource to uplift the spirit of a stay at home mom. Cheers to all moms.
I agree with Admin. The beginning of the book was a bit on the negative side towards moms that make the choice to be career women. I wasn’t very comfortable with that. However, the encouragement & support to SAHM’s in the rest of the book was priceless. I especially appreciated the part about having the proper perspective on what is truly important. I sometimes feel fashionably out of place and frumpy when I attend events where there are career moms in attendance, donning the latest fashion trend, hair highlighted, and hands in perfect French manicures. I admit, I start to feel a bit insecure & sorry for myself but then again, my child will have a lovingly prepared snack waiting for her when she gets off the school bus and clean laundry neatly folded in her drawers, still warm from just being retrieved from the dryer. The career moms’ kids will be herded off to a daycare somewhere, where mother will not be. I realize tthen that I have a lot more than most, and thank God for how GOOD He’s been to me.
Through you for details. It helped me in my responsibility
