You know I can’t even believe it has been 10 years since the attacks on 9/11. Part of me wants to say something wise to mark this terrible anniversary, but honestly my heart just breaks like everyone else. Instead of trying to see the good in such a tragic event I would rather just morn…

But here I am writing on this blog in order to maybe say a few words because my heart doesn’t want to just bury what happened. You see tragedy did take place on 9/11/01 – but when I stop to really think about it, and move past ALL the precious lives that have been lost – I can see God’s glory.

I have to say it has taken me 10 years to get to this point. Ten years ago I was a NEW Christian and 9/11 actually pushed me to the point where I decided to “not believe in Jesus anymore.” But here I am today, sold out for Christ. How could I ever live my life without Him?

You see death is TRAGIC – it’s a CURSE! What happened on 9/11 was tragic, so many lives lost, so much evil being portrayed in the minds of those who attacked. But I believe in everything there is hope, and in everything God can be glorified if we choose to see past the tragedy.

I see God’s glory in the brave men and women on 9/11 and the days, months, and YEARS after, give their life in order to try and save another, and protect this country:

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

Often my husband (who is a firefighter) will tell me that he just wants me to know that if anything ever happens to him while he is on duty that he was just doing what he would want someone else to do in order to protect and save me, and our kids.

That’s what happened on 9/11 – several people put aside their own needs, worry, and self in order to save and protect so many others. 9/11 was tragic, but it was also REAL. Life is filled with evil, uncertainties, and there is no guarantee as to how long our life will be. But if we just step back in those tragic and scary moments with the eyes and heart of Jesus we will be able to see God’s glory, and character.

On that day I blamed God. I didn’t want to believe in a God that would allow such a horrible thing to happen so I turned my back on Him. I think we need to stop blaming God for all the tragic things that happen in this world. Often I would ask God “WHY?” but not now. Now I just seek Him in EVERYTHING, because God didn’t DO this. Yes, He is sovereign over everything, and through this if we seek Him we CAN and WILL find beauty in the ashes.

A sovereign God means a God who can turn the evil in this world into something beautiful. He can take our sin and the curse of death and use it to change hearts, guide others, and push us to what we are really made of – which is the human race, 90% selfish and 10% loving. You see God sees our beauty, he sees the selfLESSNESS in us that would lay down their LIFE for another person. He sees our compassion, acceptance, and the desire for everyone to reach their full potential.

Now when I think of 9/11 I focus on the character of those who gave their life for someone they didn’t even know. Focusing on death and tragedy doesn’t help us to grow. We can’t wish it all away – trust me I have already tried this, and it doesn’t work! In this life we need to be willing to accept the good with the bad…I know it’s not easy. But when we are faced with tragedy we need to focus on this:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8

Besides the fact that it happened, the one thing I hate about the 9/11 anniversary is that we haven’t grown much from it. Unfortunately we can’t erase what happened on that day, and the truth is all we can do is move forward and learn from it. I really hope it doesn’t take another tragedy like 9/11 to pull us out of our own selfishness. If there is one lesson that can be learned from all the lives lost on 9/11 it would be to love your neighbor as yourself…

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39
