“But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. Luke 8:15 (NASB)

A lot of times we confuse will power for perseverance. Often we think in order to persevere we need to be strong willed and make sure we push through with all our strength and all our might.

But the truth is will power is not perseverance. When we rely on our own power and strength to get through something we find out real fast that we are not a god. We find failure, exhaustion, and pain around every corner. We often give up and our soul becomes heavy with guilt.

So often as Christians we read the Bible and think that God is telling us to change by sheer will power, but that’s not really the case. We aren’t called to a life filled with guilt because we fail, we are called to a life of commitment to God and His call on our life.

Perseverance isn’t will power. Perseverance is commitment. When we persevere through life we do so out of our commitment to God, and God alone. Through our commitment to Him we will find the strength, energy, and endurance to get through life while living and walking in the spirit.

Assignment:

Walking in the flesh tends to lead us to tighten our fists on the uncertainties of life. How does will power prevent us from walking in the spirit? Who are we relying on when e choose will power over our commitment to God?

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15 – When I use to look at this scripture I would think that through my actions I will show God that I love Him. But the more I look at this scripture I wonder could it mean that through my LOVE for Him my obedience will come?

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:20-27

For awhile I had thought in order to guard my heart I needed to put up a wall around my heart in order to protect it. I would not allow certain people, or things, penetrate that wall.

However the truth is putting up this wall is not guarding our heart. Instead it keeps people out, and keeps the Holy Spirit blocked in.

Guarding our heart requires us to instead be fully grounded and committed to God and His truth. This is how we really guard our heart. No walls, no barriers, just a heart that is strengthened by the truth.

When we guard our heart by growing deeper within the truth we are then able to share with others the truth that has brought us freedom without having to filter it through a wall surrounding our heart.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Have you suffered so many things in vain–if indeed it was in vain? Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?– just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. Galatians 3:1-9

Often we combine the three words: truth, obedience, and the law into one. The truth is the law, truth, and obedience are all different in the word of God.

The law refers to a way of living where we feel our actions can bring us to a place of righteousness in the eyes of the Lord. The law equals the pursuit of perfection, a perfection that we are unable to reach. With the law, who needs Jesus?

I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” Galatians 2:21

Truth refers to the word of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit! The truth doesn’t contradict, and carries the same message throughout the word of God. The message that we are all sinners and the only way we will find righteousness in the eyes of the Lord is through the perfect sacrifice made by our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. We can’t earn righteousness through the law, reincarnation, or any other way. Truth is found in unity with with Christ because when we are united with Christ we are united with the truth. Truth is found deep within our heart where the Holy Spirit dwells.

And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 2 Timothy 2:24-25

Obedience is a life lived guided by the Holy Spirit. It is a life of submission, daily surrender, and truth. When we are obedient we are living a life out of the overflow of the Holy Spirit living in our heart. It isn’t a life of action, but instead a life of reaction to the Holy Spirit dwelling in our heart. When we are obedient to Christ we are walking in the Spirit.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. ” Psalm 1:1-3 (NKJV)

Sometimes in our Bible Study and relationship with the Lord we can get a little impatient. Maybe we feel disconnected and far away from God, or embracing Him and His word.

But the fact is our relationship with God should never be fleeting. When we have hit a wall in our walk with Him that is when we need to plant our self right in His word.

In Psalm 1:2 it says blessed is a man who delights in God’s law and who meditates on His word day and night.

What do you meditate on day and night? Is it God’s word? Or is it something else like your health, money, success, or the latest worry of the day?

The truth is if we desire a deeper relationship with the Lord then we need to be delighted in Him. Everything we do needs to be rooted in Him!

This life is really all about God. It is about glorifying Him. Often I ask myself why am I writing, homeschooling, exercising, etc. The truth is I do it out of my delight in the Lord. If we do anything for our own glory, or satisfaction, or to fill a need, then we will be blown away with the wind every time a trial comes by…and we won’t be deeply rooted in anything except our own sinful desires.

Assignment:

What do you think about everyday all day? Is it God? Is it His word? What are you doing right now that is based on your delight in the Lord? What are you doing that is based on your own sinful desires? What motivates you on a daily basis?
