“But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. Luke 8:15 (NASB)

A lot of times we confuse will power for perseverance. Often we think in order to persevere we need to be strong willed and make sure we push through with all our strength and all our might.

But the truth is will power is not perseverance. When we rely on our own power and strength to get through something we find out real fast that we are not a god. We find failure, exhaustion, and pain around every corner. We often give up and our soul becomes heavy with guilt.

So often as Christians we read the Bible and think that God is telling us to change by sheer will power, but that’s not really the case. We aren’t called to a life filled with guilt because we fail, we are called to a life of commitment to God and His call on our life.

Perseverance isn’t will power. Perseverance is commitment. When we persevere through life we do so out of our commitment to God, and God alone. Through our commitment to Him we will find the strength, energy, and endurance to get through life while living and walking in the spirit.

Assignment:

Walking in the flesh tends to lead us to tighten our fists on the uncertainties of life. How does will power prevent us from walking in the spirit? Who are we relying on when e choose will power over our commitment to God?

What is one way you hope to grow in your faith this year?

I have been thinking a lot about my faith lately, and honestly it is something that I feel God is going to work on strengthening this year. But one thing I have realized is that even though I may think I haven’t been trusting God all that much, I think back on the past few years and realize that our family HAS been putting our faith in Him.

It’s not easy at times, and right now is one of those times. But God certainly wants our commitment to Him and His call on our life. So one way I hope my faith will grow this year is for my faith in the all God has on my life to be strengthened. I really want to BE BOLD and move forward with the message that He has placed on my heart. More and more I am realizing it is a message that needs to be heard and I need to stop being afraid and be willing to deliver that message however the Lord wants me to.

For a long time I have hidden behind a wall of protection and it’s difficult for me to not hide behind that wall right now. BUT I have seen so many blessings come from stepping out from behind that wall, blessings like people coming to know HIM more, and honestly that’s all that matters.

How do you feel about this new year?

Typically on New Year’s Eve when the clock strikes midnight I would feel a sense of anxiety about the unknown, and even about the time wasted in the previous year. But this year I had a whole new feeling, a feeling of hope and peace. I’m not sure what changed between the past New Year’s Eve and this year, but I’m thinking it has to do with my word for this year which is FAITH.

In 2012 I plan to step out of my comfort zone of FEAR and move into a place of FAITH. When we release our fear and walk in faith it’s amazing how our HOPE and PEACE comes back. God is good. I am truly blessed!

How Does Humility Bring Us Closer to God?

After spending a lot of time writing my upcoming new eBook “Walls of Pride” I’ve thought a lot about how pride keeps us from God. I think pride builds a wall around our heart keeping the Holy Spirit trapped inside, and also not allowing anyone else in. I think we do this in order to keep our self safe, but the problem with walls of pride is that we are also not living a life guided by the Holy Spirit. Humility brings us closer to God by removing those walls, and bringing us to a vulnerability that encourages us to lean on Him always.

Pride is not an easy thing to overcome, simply because we can be blinded by our pride to not even know we have an issue with pride. I will have to say, if you are a human being then you probably have an issue with pride.

One thing I have personally learned about pride in my own life, and watching those around me live a life filled with pride, is that it’s truly pride that keeps us from having a FULL and authentic relationship with the Lord. It’s not our sins. Our sins have already been forgiven and the bridge for us to cross over into God’s presence is there and was placed there when Jesus died on the cross. It’s our pride that keeps us from crossing that bridge.

Often with our pride our goals, dreams, and aspirations can take us to a place of discontentment. I love this quote from C.S. Lewis simply because I personally know how it feels to just want more. You see when it’s really all about God then our motivation will not be about having MORE it would be about having as much as God wants you have.

It’s really amazing how we can turn something good into something selfish…

Prayer:

Father I ask for you to help me to receive your blessings with a humble heart. Every morning I wake up I am blessed but my pride tells me otherwise. My pride is keeping me from you Lord. Help me to receive You, let the Holy Spirit in me break my pride and shine through. I pray this in your mighty son Jesus’ name. – Amen!
