After watching Episode 1 of Liberty’s Kids, I have to say I was impressed. This is a series that was originally broadcast on PBS 2002-2003, and centers on American Colonial History.
Benjamin Franklin, voiced by Walter Cronkite, is a main character, although he was referenced more than he actually appeared. Episode 1, Philadelphia to Boston, addressed the Boston Tea Party, resulting from the colonial citizens’ resentment of “taxation without representation,” while in a side story there was discussion about the colonial fight for freedom while ignoring slavery.
I have a personal love of American History, and although the animation is not the greatest, the representation of colonial sentiment was exciting. Some of the other historical figures included Samuel Adams – an important American patriot and politician in the first Continental Congress, and Phyllis Wheatley – a slave child who was educated by her owners and became famous for her poetry.
One episode lasting for almost 30 minutes only touches on some basic facts of American History, but if you have children who love learning about the founding of our nation or if you want to find a way to introduce American history to them, the Liberty’s Kids series may be a good tool for you.
Target audience age: 8-14.

I recommend this series. My almost 5 and 3 year old girls watched the first episode with interest. You can visit the Liberty’s Kids website to download and watch each episode for free, although I watched mine via Netflix.
